“Talking Story:” A Conversation About Integrating

Western Psychology and Traditional Forms of Healing

With Dr. Amee Velasco

Intention: “Talking story, “a term I’ve heard in Filipino and local Hawaiian cultures, is the social practice of sharing stories with one another for the purpose of expression, support, joy, connection and belonging. From a Western standpoint, I see its similarities with the processing of emotions and building rapport that happens in group and individual psychotherapy. In this intimate and brief gathering, let’s envision how respectfully integrating traditional and western practices can enhance the well-being of QTBIPOC communities.

BioDr. Amee Velasco (She/Her) is a licensed clinical psychologist living and working on Tongva lands in so-called Monrovia, California. As a first-generation Filipina of Ilocano parents, Dr. Velasco was born and raised within diverse communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. The sense of community and belonging followed her throughout college and graduate school where she completed a dissertation on the psychological and marital experiences of Filipino “mail-order brides” and graduated with a doctoral degree emphasizing community and multicultural psychology. Since then, Dr. Velasco has worked with Queer, Trans, Black, Brown, Indigenous and People of Color. In the Spring of 2019, Dr. Velasco co-founded with her husband a community practice they call Healing Rhythms Mental Health where she continues to outreach to underserved communities and practice individual psychotherapy addressing anxiety, trauma, relationship and cultural issues. It is with humility that she enters a new season of her personal and professional journey as an on-going student of traditional healing. Currently, Dr. Velasco is nearing the end of a 9-month cycle journeying with plant ancestors and she excitedly awaits to share her stories with you.
