Hiking Club

Category: Clubs

After a very long COVID hiatus, the LACPA Hiking Club will resume on Sunday, May 1st at 9:00 AM. Hope you can join us to celebrate getting back to nature.

Hike the Eagle Rock Loop in Topanga State Park: The Hiking Club has done this hike in previous years. It is a lovely, moderate hike with beautiful views of the ocean, Topanga Canyon and the valley. We will probably return on the Musch Trail, which offers oak, sycamore and bay trees, ferns, moss-covered rocks, and possibly stream crossings.

This is a 4 mile round-trip hike in Topanga State Park, accessed from Entrada Road, which is off of Topanga Canyon Blvd.

Sunday, May 1st @ 9:00 AM. Estimated time 2.5 - 3 hours.

Meet in the parking lot for Topanga State Park via the directions below. There are nice restrooms in the parking lot.

RSVP to Andi Ackerman [email protected]. We wait for those who have RSVP'ed. Please call 818.426.0674 day of the hike if you need help getting there or have changed your mind.

Rating: This hike is rated easy to moderate, but the ascent does climb pretty steadily to the top. We will stop to breath, drink, rest and enjoy the views of the ocean, the canyon and the valley along the way and at the top. Be sure to bring water, a hat, and perhaps a little snack for the trail. The trail itself is very clear and easy to navigate. The descent has considerably more shade than the ascent, so be prepared for full sun on the way up (unless we have beach fog that morning). Hiking boots are always recommended but probably not essential for this hike. Same with poles.

Directions: From Santa Monica, drive 4 miles northbound on PCH to Topanga Canyon Blvd. Turn right onto Topanga Canyon and travel 4.6 miles to Entrada Road on the right and turn right again. Drive 0.7 miles and turn left, following the posted state park signs. Turn left again in 0.3 miles into the Topanga State Park parking lot.

From the Ventura Freeway (US 101), exit at Topanga Canyon Blvd. and head south on Topanga Canyon. (If you are heading west, the Topanga Canyon south off ramp curves around and leaves you on Topanga Canyon Blvd. If you are heading east, the off ramp leaves you off on Ventura Blvd. Travel a few blocks further east and you will come to Topanga Canyon. Turn right and continue south up the canyon). Drive 7.6 miles south on Topanga Canyon Blvd. to Entrada Drive. (Watch for the warning sign as it comes up around a blind curve.) Turn left on Entrada Drive and follow the directions above to the parking lot.

Parking: There are a few options for parking. There is parking inside the park for $10.00 ($9.00 for seniors - how do I know that?) Please be sure to bring both cash and a credit card as I don’t know if the old-style method of payment has been replaced by the newer automated one. There is also free street parking on the streets leading into the park, but they are often quite packed. However, if you find a spot you can take the short walk into the parking lot to meet us and avoid the parking fee.

More Info.: This is one of my husband's and my favorite hikes because of the beautiful beach, valley and canyon views. We recently took some out-of-town guests on this hike and they really enjoyed it. Great for seeing a small slice of what hiking in L.A. has to offer. Please note that dogs, even on leashes, are not permitted in Topanga State Park.
