Topic: Transforming Trauma with Jiu-Jitsu

Anna Pirkl is a California Licensed Marital and Family Therapist, Licensed Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and American Art Therapy Association registered Art Therapist. She specializes in recovery from addiction, complex trauma, and anxiety disorders. Anna likes to use a variety of therapeutic tools, including Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), EMDR, and psychodynamic psychotherapy.  She has worked with a wide variety of populations from adolescents at Central Juvenile Hall, Westchester high school, Thomas Riley high school, to general mental health conditions at Airport Marina Counseling Center, to home visits with elderly and disabled at Beach Cities Health District and now in private practice at One Heart Counseling Service. Anna earned her Pink Belt in the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Women Empowered Program in Torrance, CA, and went on to earn her Combatives Belt and Blue Belt and continues to train in the master cycle of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Anna has a passion for helping clients break through fear. She has helped people swim that had fear of water, helped a person with a phobia of bees visit a bee rescuer and her hives and regularly helps trauma survivors with a fear of Jiu-Jitsu find their ability to get on the mat and train. Another passion of hers’ is elevating the voices of children through social action and psycho-political therapies and compassion building (anti-bullying) events. In addition to her clinical work, she is a speaker and researcher with a long resume of talking engagements and now research on the impact of jiu-jitsu. Anna has authored and co-authored 2 books: 12 creative experiences for personal growth in recovery and Transforming Trauma with Jiu-Jitsu.  No matter who Anna is helping with what, or where she is sharing her expertise, she grounds herself in humanistic philosophy and considers it a privilege to join her clients and communities on their healing journey.
