    • Grassroots Inclusive Sports: Building Relationships with Teams and Organizations
  • Speaker: David “Dirk” Smith
  • Title: I Feel So Happy and Sporty and GAY! How Discrimination Impacts Performance and Drives the Emergence of Grassroots Inclusive Sports
  • Description: 2023 has seen a significant rise in discrimination and violence targeted at the LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex) community. With over 400 bills introduced in local, state, and federal governments seeking to strip the rights from and persecute LGBTQI people simply for existing. Sports itself has always lagged behind greater society in terms of acceptance and inclusion of LGBTQI people, with this rise of bigotry threatening the progress already made. For this workshop, we will unpack how discrimination and bigotry against LGBTQI athletes influences sport performance, mental health, and participation. We will also explore how this has also led to the emergence of LGBTQI specific sport structures, teams, leagues and sporting events such as the Gay Games as well as the underlying reasons why LGBTQI continue to pursue sports despite the discrimination.
