This presentation identifies the difficulty parents have in translating strategies and methods that have been developed in therapy to the home environment and in communicating them to teachers. It offers techniques to help therapists teach parents and teachers to interpret a child's behavior, respond effectively, and accelerate progress. 

Sari Goodman has a BA in psychology, 3 teaching credentials, and a Masters degree in Education. She has over 30 years of experience as a teacher, elementary school administrator, and parent educator. As an adjunct instructor at Mt. Saint Mary's College, Department of Education, Sari taught preservice teachers and was a teacher and research assistant at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute ECC.  

 

 Course Goals and Educational Objectives: 

Attendees will be able to:  

1. Accelerate the progress clients (parents and children) make by focusing on helping parents translate methods developed in therapy to the family environment and sharing that knowledge with their child's teachers.

2. Utilize methods from the field of education that teach parents and teachers to confidently and consistently apply the tools and responses developed in therapy at home and school, with a focus on the concept of clear language, observation, logical consequences, perspective taking, cause and effect, and Zone of Proximal Development.

Course Outline:

I. Introductions (10 Minutes)

a. How does my background relate to this topic?

b. Stated problem (with examples)
i. Difficulty consistently transferring strategies developed in therapy to home and school environments is an obstacle to progress

1. Adults in therapy who are struggling with being a parent
2. Children in therapy whose parents must learn to respond to their children's unique temperaments
3. Teachers with large classes and many students with IEPs who must make accommodations and modifications
c. Outline a solution
i. Borrow from the field of education to teach parents techniques for supporting the transfer of strategies and actions discussed in therapeutic settings to the home environment
ii. Teach specific questions and phrases that parents can use to describe their child to teachers in a way that offers tools for classroom support
iii. Present strategies directly to teachers through written recommendations of in-person student study team meetings

II. Look to the field of education to accelerate the therapeutic process (total 45 minutes)
